Fly Fishing in Jackson Hole
β€” Legendary Waters

Jackson Hole Today Staff  Β·  Complete Guide 2026

Few places on earth offer fly fishing as good as Jackson Hole. The Snake River and its tributaries wind through Grand Teton National Park and the greater valley, carrying wild cutthroat trout, brown trout, and mountain whitefish through some of the most stunning scenery in the American West. Whether you're a seasoned angler or picking up a rod for the first time, this valley will get its hooks into you.

🏞️ Where to Fish

🐟

Snake River β€” South Fork & Main Stem

The crown jewel of Jackson Hole fishing. The Snake runs clear and cold through the valley, with excellent populations of native Snake River Fine-Spotted Cutthroat Trout. The float section from South Park Bridge to East Table is particularly productive, with classic riffles and side channels. Wading is possible in many sections but float trips via drift boat are the preferred method.

πŸ”οΈ

Flat Creek β€” National Elk Refuge

One of the most unique fishing experiences in Wyoming. Flat Creek runs through the National Elk Refuge just outside of Jackson and is one of the few spring-fed streams in the area. It holds large, wild cutthroat β€” and they are notoriously hard to catch. Season typically opens August 1st. A wading license and refuge permit are required.

Buffalo Fork & Gros Ventre Rivers

Two tributaries that feed the Snake River and offer excellent backcountry-style fishing with far fewer anglers. The Gros Ventre runs through a dramatic canyon east of Kelly and is accessible by road, while the Buffalo Fork flows through open meadows near Moran Junction β€” both beautiful, both productive.

🌊

Jackson Lake

The largest lake in Grand Teton National Park offers lake fishing for lake trout, brown trout, and mountain whitefish. Boat access is available at Colter Bay Marina. A Wyoming fishing license is required, and some sections of the lake are subject to special regulations β€” check current rules with the park.

πŸ—“οΈ Best Season Prime time is July through October, when flows stabilize and dry-fly fishing peaks. The salmon fly and golden stonefly hatches in late June and early July are legendary events that bring big fish to the surface. Spring runoff (May–June) can make wading dangerous but drift boat fishing is still excellent.

πŸ“‹ Licenses & Regulations

A Wyoming fishing license is required for anyone 14 years of age or older. Licenses can be purchased online through the Wyoming Game & Fish Department or at most local fly shops. Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge have additional permit requirements in certain areas β€” always check current regulations before heading out.

Catch-and-release is strongly encouraged on most Snake River tributaries. Handle fish with wet hands, minimize time out of water, and use barbless hooks where possible. These wild fish populations are what make Jackson Hole special β€” let's keep them thriving.
