Jackson Hole Today Staff  ยท  Complete Guide 2026

The Snake River is the lifeblood of Jackson Hole โ€” and in summer, it becomes the valley's greatest playground. From mellow scenic floats where moose wander the banks to white-knuckle whitewater drops through canyon walls, the Snake and its surrounding lakes offer something for every type of water adventurer.

๐ŸŒŠ Types of River Experiences

Scenic Float Trips โ€” The Snake River

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Family Friendly ๐ŸŸข Calm Waters ๐Ÿ“ Moose to South Park โฑ๏ธ 2โ€“3 Hours

The classic Jackson Hole river experience. Float the scenic section of the Snake River from Deadman's Bar or Moose through Grand Teton National Park, drifting past cottonwood groves, bald eagles, osprey nests, and โ€” if you're lucky โ€” moose wading in the shallows. This is a flat, calm section of river perfect for all ages. Professional oarsmen do all the work while you soak in the scenery.

Guided scenic floats typically run 2 to 3 hours and include all safety equipment. No experience required.

Whitewater Rafting โ€” Snake River Canyon

๐Ÿ”ด Whitewater โšก Class IIIโ€“IV ๐Ÿ“ South of Jackson โฑ๏ธ Half or Full Day

South of Jackson, the Snake River drops into a dramatic canyon and picks up serious speed. The canyon section features Class III and Class IV rapids with evocative names like Lunch Counter, Rope, and Champagne. This is proper whitewater โ€” you will get wet, you might fall out (and that's fine), and you will have an incredible time.

Half-day whitewater trips are the most popular option, but full-day trips with a riverside lunch are also available. Minimum age is typically 7โ€“8 years old and guests should be comfortable swimming in moving water.

Kayaking โ€” Jackson Lake & Tributary Streams

๐Ÿ›ถ Sea Kayak ๐Ÿ“ Jackson Lake ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง All Levels ๐Ÿ”๏ธ Teton Views

Kayaking on Jackson Lake is a bucket-list experience. The 15-mile-long lake sits at the foot of the Tetons, offering surreal reflections of the mountains on calm mornings. Colter Bay and Signal Mountain Lodge both offer rental kayaks and canoes. Guided kayak tours are available and highly recommended for first-timers unfamiliar with mountain lake conditions.

Experienced paddlers can explore the lake's many coves, camp on remote shorelines (with a backcountry permit), and access areas of the park that most visitors never see.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Water Temperature Warning The Snake River and Jackson Lake are fed by snowmelt and stay cold โ€” often 45โ€“55ยฐF โ€” well into summer. All guided trips provide wetsuits or dry suits for whitewater, but even scenic float guests should bring layers. Hypothermia is a real risk if you end up in the water unprepared.

๐Ÿ“… Best Time to Go

River season in Jackson Hole runs from late May through September. Peak whitewater is in June when snowmelt is highest โ€” flows are powerful and the rapids are at their biggest. By July and August, flows mellow slightly making it a great time for families. The scenic float section is excellent all summer long.

Early mornings offer the calmest winds on Jackson Lake for kayakers, plus the best wildlife activity along the river banks. Evening floats on the scenic section can be magical โ€” the light on the Tetons at golden hour is unforgettable.

All outfitters provide life jackets (PFDs) and are required by law to have guests wear them. Wetsuits for whitewater trips are included or available to rent. Most trips require closed-toe shoes โ€” sandals with heel straps are acceptable.
