Jackson Hole sits at the heart of one of the last intact ecosystems in the lower 48 states. Summer brings longer days, greener meadows, and some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities anywhere in North America. Here's where to go โ and what to look for.
Pull off along the flat sagebrush plain east of Moose for reliable bison sightings year-round. Early morning and dusk are ideal. Stay at least 25 yards away at all times.
Just north of the Town of Jackson, the refuge hosts thousands of elk in winter, but pronghorn and mule deer are common in summer. The refuge road offers excellent viewing from your car.
Grizzlies are frequently spotted on hillsides digging for roots and insects in early summer. Always carry bear spray and never approach. Binoculars are your best friend here.
Osprey, bald eagles, and great blue herons patrol the Snake River all summer long. The overlook off Highway 89 gives you a sweeping view of the river corridor below.
Moose love the willow thickets and shallow ponds near Jackson Lake. Oxbow Bend at sunrise is one of the most photographed wildlife spots in the entire park โ for good reason.
Always maintain safe distances, never feed wildlife, and check with Grand Teton National Park rangers for current hotspot conditions. Wildlife viewing is best at dawn and dusk.
